If you've moved house, or are getting ready to move, you may need to find out who your new energy supplier is. When you move into a new home, the existing supplier will automatically provide your energy, unless you choose to switch.

Below we explain the information you’ll need and who to contact to find out your gas and electricity provider. And if you’re wondering how to change energy supplier to SSE, we'll guide you through the switching process.

Who supplies my gas?

To find out your gas supplier, call the meter number helpline on 0870 608 1524. You'll need to tell them your postcode and the first line of your address. They'll tell you your MPRN and who your current gas provider is. Please note the helpline costs 7p per minute and is nationwide.

Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) refers to your gas supply. It remains with that supply, and doesn't go with you when you move. If you have more than one gas supply, you'll also have more than one MPRN.

Who supplies my electricity?

You’ll need to call your local electricity distributor to find out your electricity supplier. The distributor and number to call will differ by area. They’ll ask you for your MPAN, but if you don’t know it, your distributor should still be able to find who your electricity supplier is.

Your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) is for your electricity supply. It is also called a supply number and it doesn’t transfer when you move. If you have more than one electricity supply, you’ll have more than one MPRN.

How do I change my energy supplier?

Switching online is the easiest way to change your energy supplier. You can choose one of our energy tariffs online and personalise your prices by adding your usage information or some details about your household.

Once you’ve chosen to join us, it’s usually a three week switching process and we’ll keep you informed every step of the way. We'll contact your old energy provider to let them know you’ve decided to move to us, and let you know what day your gas and electricity supply will be switched. We'll also send you a welcome pack, with all the information you need.
