What is midata?

Midata is a UK government initiative that we've signed up to. It means you can download how much gas or electricity you've used over the year, and how much we think you'll use in future. So it's easy for you to compare energy suppliers, and make sure you're on the right energy plan for you.

You can find out more about midata on the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills website.

How midata helps you compare energy tariffs

To get the right energy deal, you need to have your actual energy usage. Your midata file has your electricity or gas usage for the year all ready to go. So you know your energy tariff comparison is based on the gas or electricity you're actually using and not an average.

You can get new midata once a year, after your annual statement comes out. Make sure to give us regular meter readings so your data is right. You can do this on your online account whenever you want.

How to get your midata file

To get your data, you'll need to have an online account and have had an annual summary from us. Then all you need to do is:

  1. Log in to your online account.
  2. Open the energy product you want to get midata for i.e. your gas or electric account.
  3. Choose ‘View your usage’ and open 'Get your midata'.
  4. Read the terms and conditions and tick the box to say you've done so.
  5. Select the download link.

Your midata is downloaded as a CSV file. It works best with a spreadsheet programme like Microsoft Office Excel. If you've got a meter with more than one reading, like Economy 7, you'll only have one figure to use. It won't be broken down into ‘Day’ and 'Night' for example.

Need an online account?

If you haven't got an online account with us, why not register for one now? It makes managing your energy accounts easy. You can give us readings, make payments and much more. Just remember that if you haven't had an annual summary yet, you won't have anything in your midata file.
