We're delighted to have been announced in September 2016 as the first major sponsor of women's football in Scotland. As the official partner of the Scotland Women's National Team and title sponsor of the newly re-branded SSE Scottish Women's Cup, we'll be providing investment across the women's game.
The deal is the first ever joint sponsorship agreed by the Scottish FA and Scottish Women's Football. It includes, for the first time, prize money for the 2016 SSE Scottish Women's Cup winners, with a prize money pot to be extended to earlier rounds from next season.
The sponsorship comes at an exciting time for women's football in Scotland, with the national team having just qualified for its first ever major tournament finals.
John Stewart, SSE Director of Human Resources, said: “SSE is proud to be the first major sponsor of women's football in Scotland, entering this partnership with one simple ambition - to make a difference to the future of women's football and sport.”
“We have already made a commitment to supporting women's football through The SSE Women's FA Cup, but see this investment as an opportunity to help drive the women's game forward in Scotland, inspiring both future players and supporters of women's football.”
“SSE also sees the partnership as an opportunity to increase grassroots support for girls, with the goal to get more girls playing the beautiful game.”
The first SSE Scottish Women's Cup Final
Sunday 6 November 2016 saw Scotland's top two women's football teams battle it out for the first SSE Scottish Women's Cup. The game was played at The SuperSeal Stadium, Hamilton as Glasgow City FC took on Hibernian Ladies.
It was a fantastic match with both teams showcasing the incredible talent in Scottish women's football. In the end, it was Hibernian Ladies who claimed the 2016 SSE Scottish Women's Cup after winning 6-5 on penalties.
The game was one of the most viewed Scottish Women's Football games ever. A record crowd came along on the day, while fans also watched the game broadcast live on BBC Alba.
We're delighted with the success of the first SSE Scottish Women's Cup Final and look forward to its continued involvement with women's football in Scotland.
